“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?” – MLK
I don’t believe there is a more pivotal question that could suggest how we should strive to live our lives. Dr.King devoted his life to service. His dedication and PASSION for seeking to solve a problem dramatically changed the country we live in. We never know how we can change people’s lives. It doesn’t matter how large or small the gesture, we have the power to alter someones human experience. That is MAJOR. Whether it be holding the door for someone, offering words of encouragement to a friend, mentoring, or working with those in need…we (ordinary folks) have the power to change lives. So why is it important to help others?
Strong In Spirit, Humble in Heart
Everyone Can Teach Us A Lesson
Helping others can expose us to people from all walks of life. This type of exposure is tremendous because it presents us with learning opportunities. Helping people can teach us lessons in gratitude, inspire us, and even help us overcome challenges by exposing us to different ways of thinking. There have been plenty of times where I’ve gone to volunteer or help someone and they say is one sentence that solved a problem I had been dealing with.
Exposure to different people from different backgrounds, especially in a service capacity, allows us to expand our understanding of the human condition. We can combine this knowledge with our gifts and talents to make our world better.
No One Does it On Their Own
I’ve never subscribed to the idea of “the self-made man”. There is no such thing. Even the most successful people in the world had someone read their resume at some point. Entrepreneurs need people who believe in them to provide the resources they need to build their dreams. Let’s also not forget we all went to school and had teachers. (Great teachers serve daily.) Even now, in our daily lives, someone is looking out for us whether we are aware of it or not.
The fact is, we all need help at some point and it’s not a matter of “if we will need help” but “when”.
There is power in helping others. It’s like a ripple effect. As humans, we rub off on one another constantly…so let’s try to make sure it’s for the better. You may never really know who HAS helped you and who IS helping you now. So always remember to pay it forward….
